Ayurvedic tips for Thanksgiving

Sep 16, 2024

Thanksgiving renders many thoughts of over-eating, indulging and perhaps stress of the busy season or family matters. Here are some practical tips to help you get through the holiday:

- BREATHE! Practice mindful breathing as you prepare for the busy day and to help you digest your food most properly and also reduce stress. Long, deep breaths into your belly are best.
- Start your day with meditation and of course, be mindful of what you are thankful for. Gratitude makes for a happy heart.
- Chew on a piece of ginger before your big meal or drink ginger tea to jump start your digestion before your food hits your stomach.
- It's easy to over-eat but try to take smaller portions as you sample foods. Food is best digested when your stomach is 1/2 full of food, 1/4 fluid like water (NOT iced) and 1/4 SPACE!
- Try to avoid incompatible food combinations such as fruit with the rest of your meal
- While you are eating, be sure you are sitting upright, not slouched.
- After eating, lay on your left side for 20 minutes to aid in digestion (think gravity!)
- Take a nice walk in the afternoon or early evening.,
- Avoid excessive alcohol which is dehydrating
- Drink warm water or tea throughout the day
