Jul 31, 2025Discover Reiki: What It Is, How It Works, and Why You Should Try It
If you’ve ever felt curious about alternative healing methods or sought a gentle, natural way to improve your well-being, Reiki might just be what you’re looking for. But what exactly is Reiki, how does it work, and why could it be beneficial for you? Let’s explore this beautiful energy healing practice.
First.... How did I find Reiki?
I was going through a really difficult time in my life when my mother introduced me to her friend who practiced Reiki. Skeptical - I had never heard of this strange word nor knew what to expect - but I was desperate for some healing. It took me awhile to settle into the session, but once I did my nervous system melted. I walked away feeling a sense of hope, joy and that my battery was re-charged. I kept going back for sessions and eventually wanted to learn the practice so I could use it on myself and to help others. Over the next couple of years I completed levels 1, 2 & master levels of Reiki. I practiced Reiki on my friends, family & clients and also volunteered at Woodwinds Hospital where I practiced Reiki on patients the nurses would refer to our service. This was a very special & unique opportunity and I could see the patient's pain, anxiety and fear melt away even after only a 20 minute session. Often times, I would quietly slip out of the room as the patient had fallen asleep. Now I see Reiki being offered by massage therapists and even at local gyms! What I also love about Reiki is how it integrates so well with Ayurveda - energy work is part of the 5 sense therapies!
What Is Reiki?
Reiki is a form of energy healing that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. The word “Reiki” comes from two Japanese words: “Rei” meaning universal and “Ki” meaning life energy. Simply put, Reiki is the practice of channeling universal life energy to promote healing and balance within the body, mind, and spirit. It is NOT giving of my energy to you, which is a common misconception.
Unlike many healing practices, Reiki is non-invasive and gentle. It involves a practitioner placing their hands lightly on or just above the person receiving treatment, allowing energy to flow naturally to where it’s needed most.
How Does Reiki Work?
Reiki works by helping to balance the flow of energy in your body via the 7 chakras (energy centers of the body). According to this healing philosophy, energy blockages or imbalances can lead to physical discomfort, emotional stress, or spiritual unrest. By using specific hand positions, a Reiki practitioner helps clear these blockages, supporting your body’s natural ability to heal itself.
Although Reiki is considered a spiritual practice, it is not tied to any religion and can be experienced by anyone regardless of their beliefs. Many people report feeling deep relaxation, warmth, or tingling sensations during a session — all signs that energy is moving and working within them.
Benefits of Reiki Healing
Reiki has been embraced worldwide because it offers a range of benefits for overall wellness, including:
-
Stress reduction and relaxation: Reiki helps calm the nervous system, reducing anxiety and promoting peacefulness.
-
Pain relief: Many people find relief from chronic pain, headaches, and other discomforts.
-
Emotional balance: Reiki can support emotional healing by releasing tension and negative emotions.
-
Improved sleep: Regular sessions may lead to better sleep quality.
-
Enhanced spiritual growth: Reiki can deepen your connection to yourself and your inner peace.
Importantly, Reiki is a complementary therapy, which means it works alongside conventional medicine to enhance your healing journey.
Why Should You Try Reiki?
Trying Reiki can be a gentle step toward better self-care and holistic health. Whether you’re dealing with stress, physical pain, or simply want to feel more balanced, Reiki offers a nurturing space to relax and recharge. Because it’s non-invasive and suitable for all ages, it’s accessible to almost everyone.
If you’re open to exploring energy healing and want to experience a soothing practice that promotes well-being on multiple levels, Reiki is worth trying.
